Hi friend,

We’ve been gone a little longer than usual, but to be fair, we’ve been busy partying after our B Corp certification came through at the end of August. šŸ¾

It’s not all been fun and games though, we’ve been in the lab diving into new projects and cooking up some important resources now that summer’s begun to fade away. šŸ‘‡

We’re making a list, checking it twice

Too early to get festive? We’ve worked with quite a few businesses on their impact reports, and something we’ve noticed is that the process isn’t the easiest thing to figure out.

To help, we’ve just released our brand new Impact Reporting Checklist, an organised, yet easy to digest document to help support any business looking for that helping hand on knowing what to include in an impact report, and how to smash the execution.

We just put out two new blogs this week, one from Beth on her personal insights and top tips after going through the B Corp certification process, and one from Josh in a new series ā€˜Reporting on Reporting’, where we take a look at key built environment brands and how they approach impact reporting.

šŸ” Fun fact of the week: It’s been nearly 239 years since one of the most costly wars in human history. The Kettle War was fought between the Holy Roman Empire and the Republic of the Seven Netherlands. The only casualty was an unfortunate soup kettle hit by a stray bullet. šŸ˜” #NeverForget

Can this bacteria save the day?

Humans have managed to generate around 2.5 billion tonnes of plastic waste over the years, but some helpful little fellas might be able to aid us in managing it. A unique type of bacteria found in a Japanese dump can break down PET through a specific enzyme. Even though it currently only eats one type of plastic, it might be a good idea to start storing your Lego sets in the freezer just in case.

The nineteen eighty four ā€˜batshit insane story of the month award’ goes to Rosebank, the UK’s largest untapped oil field which was just approved for development.

The field of fossil fuels could provide up to 300 million barrels of oil, with about 200 million tonnes of CO2 to match! None of us at Avery & Brown are happy about this one, and we’d take a wager that not many of you are either.

There’s some remarkable rewilding about to go down across Africa. After buying the largest private collection of rhinos in the world, charity African Parks plan to release the entire collection of 2,000 rhinos into the wild across a 10 year span. Considering this collection makes up about 15% of the worldwide rhino population, this is a huge conservation effort.

We don’t often give organisations a highlight if it’s not in the news, but we had to this month after reading about the work We Care Kauai have been getting up to. Tourist destinations like the Hawaiian island of Kauai often see a lot of environmental issues due to tourism, so We Care Kauai set out to create a positive relationship between the locals and visitors in its own unique way, creating harmony that directly benefits the island. This stuff is awesome to see.

Facebook gets a facelift

Facebook just had a subtle in-house rebrand. It still keeps with the familiar blue, but the overall colour palette, logo, and wordmark has seen a few updates. Facebook design director Dave Nguyen has said the goal of the work was to ā€˜expand upon our foundation’. At least this one’s seemed to have gone down a lot better than Twitter.

Speaking of, Musk is at it again after using the same logo as a Scottish football team for SpaceX. It’s either stolen or clipart, and for a multi-million dollar company, we’re not sure which is worse.

For creatives, there’s nothing better than entering pure flow state. Ideas become reality, and everything just works. Though, what should we do when we’re not working our best that day and nothing seems to come together? Illustrator and author Ben Tallon recently covered this, and it may be down to getting your creative priorities in check.

This resource might take the cake as the most intense collection of designer tools possible. We love adding design tools to our belt every now and again, and this database probably lists every single one you could ever need!

The power of feedback and purpose

There are two major factors at play when it comes to effective leadership, fostering a shared sense of purpose among the team, and knowing how to provide effective feedback to the team. This Forbes write-up explores these two areas, and outlines the steps we can take to start leading with impact.

Can misalignment of B2B marketing and sales place you in the ā€˜circles of doom’? The average alignment of B2B marketing and sales sits at 16%, which is a shockingly small number we don’t think anyone wants to be at. So here’s how we can make sure we stay aligned to generate that pipeline we’re all after. It’s time for the ā€˜circles of boom’.

Looking for some training to upskill your team? The Better Business Network is organising Deaf Awareness Training sessions in London and Manchester, carried out by accredited training providers at the Royal Association for Deaf people (RAD), which is incredibly useful for any team to better communicate and work effectively with deaf people and people with hearing loss or tinnitus, as well as understand the barriers they face.
